Shelton Poulter, LCSW
Licensed Therapist & Clinical Social Work Supervisor
Telehealth across Virginia
Meet Shelton
Shelton works with teens ages 12+ and adults navigating anxiety, depression, OCD, relationship challenges, communication concerns, and questions around connection and intimacy. Shelton’s approach is collaborative, supportive, and grounded in creating a space where clients can feel comfortable being fully themselves.
-
Shelton believes therapy works best when people feel safe enough to show up honestly.
The goal isn’t to arrive with everything figured out. Therapy can be a place to better understand what you’re experiencing, identify the patterns that may be getting in the way, and build skills that help you move forward with greater confidence.
Shelton works collaboratively with each client, recognizing that everyone brings their own strengths, experiences, and goals into the process.

Shelton primarily draws from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Motivational Interviewing.
Depending on what a client needs, the work may involve understanding thought and behavior patterns, exploring motivation for change, strengthening communication, or developing practical skills that support day-to-day life.
Shelton is also kink-affirming and strives to create a nonjudgmental environment where clients can openly discuss sexuality, intimacy, relationships, and other parts of their experience without fear of judgment.
-
In addition to clinical work, Shelton provides supervision for clinicians working toward licensure in clinical social work.
Shelton enjoys helping supervisees grow in confidence and clinical skill and is interested in continuing to expand this part of the work.
Looking ahead, Shelton also hopes to pursue certification in Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy.
-
Shelton is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with experience supporting adolescents and adults across a range of emotional and relational concerns.
Additional areas of training and interest include Motivational Interviewing, sexuality, kink-affirming care, childhood development, and parenting.
Shelton has completed multiple courses related to childhood development and also enjoys helping parents navigate the challenges that can come with raising children and adolescents.
-
Shelton loves parrots and currently has four of them, complete with their own room where they can free-fly and an outdoor aviary.
That interest may eventually become something even bigger: Shelton hopes to start a small parrot rescue after retirement.
