Barbara Schmanski
Resident in Counseling
Telehealth across Virginia
Meet Barbara
Barbara works with clients ages 10+ navigating neurodivergence, trauma, anxiety, depression, relationship difficulties, life transitions, and the unique challenges that can come with military family life. Her approach is flexible, collaborative, and grounded in the belief that therapy should adapt to you, not the other way around.
-
If the idea of sitting perfectly still, making constant eye contact, and only talking about your feelings sounds intimidating, Barbara gets it.
Therapy can look a lot of different ways. That might mean talking things through, fidgeting, coloring, crocheting, or having a fur baby make a surprise appearance during a telehealth session.
Barbara’s goal is to create a space where clients can show up as their authentic selves and feel comfortable engaging in therapy in ways that actually work for them.

Barbara takes an integrative approach to therapy, drawing from person-centered, psychodynamic, and strengths-based perspectives.
Her work may also incorporate psychoeducation, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, Acceptance & Commitment Therapy, and collaborative problem-solving.
Barbara places particular emphasis on sensory and environmental accommodations and executive functioning strategies, helping make the therapeutic process more accessible and supportive for each individual client.
-
As a military spouse herself, Barbara understands how constant change, uncertainty, and transition can affect a person’s stability, identity, relationships, and sense of home.
She is passionate about supporting military-connected clients as they navigate those experiences with greater understanding, flexibility, and support.
Barbara is also bilingual in English and Spanish.
-
Barbara is a Resident in Counseling and works with children, teens, adults & couples.
She is currently especially interested in continuing her training in EMDR and somatic-based therapies.
Barbara hopes to deepen her understanding of how these approaches can support trauma processing and help clients develop a stronger connection between mind and body.
-
Barbara firmly believes there’s a playlist for every mood, and there’s a pretty good chance she already has one.
She’s also a big reader, especially when it comes to fantasy, thrillers, and mysteries. One favorite is Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas, which she loves enough to have a tattoo inspired by the series.
When she needs to recharge, Barbara enjoys time with her husband, close friends, and two dogs, getting lost in a good book, or heading to the gym to work through some nervous energy.
